Why did The Tomato cut his hair... then lose.?

The Mighty Tomato Has struck out.

(my apologies to Casey at the Bat.)

The crowd gathered to see his last run

His high flying tricks were always fun

The man did fly, but was holding back

Playing it safe was the way for this track

Such was not the way of the man we knew

Holding back was not something he'd do.

The last run, last chance to fly high and win

No more holding back now, no reining in.

At great risk the man of gold did hard try

To win the gold by flying good and high

The lights did dim, the crowed did gasp

The mighty has fallen, all hopes are dashed

There is no joy in Carlsbad on this long night

The golden man has not flown high and tight

Some will holler, some will cuss, some will shout

The mighty Flying Tomato has at last struck out.

He's getting older. He's almost 30. He probably cut his hair to look more mature, and I honestly find it more attractive. It's honestly not a surprise he lost either. He has been dealing with a lot of injuries lately and the body can only handle Olympic-level training for so long. He's also been venturing into other things such as music lately. It sucks that he didn't get the last hoorah he wanted, but his career has been very successful as is.

He may not have medaled in this year's Olympics but he didn't lose. He is 27 after all and at some point he would have had to step aside for younger competitors. That's just the way it is in anything dependent heavily on the body. Snowboarding is hard on the body, those jarring landing, those twists. It's one winter sport I wish I could have done (well, not all those extreme tricks though) but at my age, even if I don't pay enough attention and twist in certain ways, my joints start screaming and giving me trouble for days afterward. You have to realize that snowboard is a relatively young sport, especially in the Olympics. Without Shaun pushing the envelope all these years it might have turned into the, yawn, same kind of sport like so many others where they'd have to do a half pike, then a 190 then a super yutz (whatever)--all dictated by someone else and it'd have turned into a very boring competition. But because Shaun has worked so hard to promote the sport, because he's pushed the sport to the extreme, it's still a self-expressive run. Yea, Shaun didn't win but he's done more for that sport then anyone else, he's the one most associated with raising the sport from infancy--and spreading the desire in so many young folks to go for it. No one is going to remember whoever the guys are that won this year; everyone is going to remember Shaun White. I don't think he has anything to be down about, or ashamed of, Why he cut his hair, could be that he just feels that maybe he needed to grow up and give up his long hair. Maybe he just wanted to see what it feels like. Maybe he just wanted something new. It'll be interesting to see if he keeps his short hair or if he lets it grow out again since many sportsmen/women are very superstitious.
