Curling (ice sport) question?
Just watching today's curling. GBR just knocked Canada's stone away from the house and one of the Canadians swept the ice as if to increase the speed of the stone away from the house? Why? Or does a different sweeping motion slow the stone down?
Also how do our Olympic teams get paid. Sponsorship? But do the have other normal jobs too or are they paid to train daily
Thank you

Canada must have wanted their rock to travel farther, for some reason. Sweeping decreases the friction between the rock and the ice, so it will always make the rock go farther.
Nearly all curlers have "day jobs" besides curling. Olympic-level curlers may get a little funding from their countries' national curling associations for travel expenses, and you can get some money by winning tournaments, but typically you cannot make a living strictly on curling.

You can sweep your opponent's rocks once they pass the T-line to try to move them out of the house. I think the Muirfield rink has been curling full time to prepare for Sochi and is doing quite well from sponsors and tournament winnings. I don't know if the GB mens rink are full time curlers or not.
