How to teach 6th graders area?
One of my 6th grade classes are having a hard time with finding the area of shapes. When I walk them threw it the can tell me everything and it seams like they get it but when I give the a independent assignment... Well it looks like they don't know what there doing.
I've tried everything but it's not clicking.
Do y'all have any ideas that will help???
I think there problem is that there not looking at there formula charts. I tell them that I want to see the equation for every problem but there still not doing it.

Have you tried some real world problems? Relate finding the area of something to something in the real world, like figuring out how much grass seed you should buy if you know your yard is a triangle shape with a base of 20 yards and a height of 40 yards. (I'm sure you can think of something that 6th graders can relate to.) But don't teach math as some process that needs to be memorized, like following a recipe in a cook book. There are usually many ways to find the correct answer - memorizing formulas or looking up formulas in a book should be their last resort.
