Semi Truck owner operators?

I retired from Class A {company driver} last year after 14 years. A business friend asks me, He wants to know if he buys a semi truck can he rent out the truck. I knew alittle about this as maybe he could and pay the a driver 40 cents a mile and make a profit. I could have tried to talk him out of this. The only thing I have ever heard simular is a owner operator buying 2-3 trucks and hiring drivers while working for a company. a small fleet.

I know of the job boards where owner operators finds freight. I know very little believing these owner operators are leased to a particular company.

My friend is willing to learn yet could what I described be profitable?

Probably not. This is a cut-throat business and it is very difficult for trucking knowledgeable people to make a profit.

Having said that, there are too many things he need to know to discuss here.

The blog listed below will give you straightforward information on all segments (licensing, registration, insurance, taxes, record keeping, bookkeeping, and other requirements).

The ebook will walk you through the process, including links to individual state agencies needed to set up you business.

  • The days of the small privateer are coming to an end, Due to EPA regulations he'll need to buy a brand new truck that meets at least tier 4 standards, here in CA were at tier 4 interim meaning tier 5 is just around the corner, and the rest of the nation and EPA will follow suit, so unless he plans to buy new or throw some serious money at this truck for emission upgrades he's kicking a dead horse, Some people aint as stupid as you think, there selling these trucks at bargain prices in hopes of finding someone dumb enough to not read up or know the new laws concerning these matters, Oh yea got a great deal on the truck, but you cant register it and drive it till it meets EPA standards, and that usually cost about as much as the purchase price of the truck, So how much money does he have? think he can give Hertz and Penske a run for there money?
