how do i find a babysitter in a small town?

I live In a mining town with no after school programs and can't seem to find a reliable babysitter. One started lighting fires in the house, another was stealing. My son is seven and needs someone from after school until I get home from work at 5;30. I've advertised on the board at the mall and the high school, but kids here generally have so much money from their parents that they don't care about earning pocket money. Spring break is coming and I'm at my wits' end! Any suggestions welcome.

I would call your child's school and ask if they know a home day care close to the school for school aged children....often the school office knows someone...

also I would look in the local paper and see if any are advertisted..

some day cares use craig's list also

I would not use a teen...finds an adult..

Try Craig's List. Also your son's school may offer some suggestions. Perhaps there is a Boys & Girls club nearby. Also you might try consulting the Department of Social Services or Human Services (same thing different name) for a list of certified child care providers. They usually have a list because mother's have 2 years to be off of AFDC so need child care to return to work and/or school.

Church is always good. Check with a local pastor or church secretary. They will know most folks and will probably be the most help in finding someone reliable. If you can't find someone, check with neighbors who may help out in a pinch or have nieces who might want some extra cash. Other than that, could a parent come and help out over Spring Break

Network with friends and family. This is traditionally how one finds a sitter. I see you are in Canada. This service only works in the USA http://reliablesitters.org/ Perhaps you can find it's Canadian version online and find a sitter that way.
