Perspex on stairs instead of spindles?
Hi,
I have been doing some work on my house, i pulled off some wood around the stairs under the banister thing which was there when i bought it with the intention of putting spindles there.
The problem is i have opened a can of worms and it would cost me in the region of £400-600 to put spindles in as i have to pretty much have the whole banister re-done.
I have been looking at alternatives and one that i came across was to have a bit piece of perspex in the gap secured by some hinge type things. I was looking at toughened glass but i think that will just be too expensive so then i thought thick perspex might do the job at a fraction of the cost.
Im just wondering what peoples thoughts are and whether they think it will work and if so if they can point me in the right direction of what i need.
Cheers
I dont think it can be done due to building regs. I have read it can melt in a fire and so it would not pass.
Looks like i might have to see how much glass would be.

The first thing you need to do, is check with your local authority governing the building codes in your area. You need to know what is required by the building codes, and if you need any permits for the work.
Most building codes call for a maximun space between the spindles....that space being small enough a child would find it difficult to put their head through. This can also be done by installing a solid sheet product, such as tempered (safety) glass, and some areas might allow acrylic....you NEED to know for certain what your local authority will allow.
PPG is a worlwide supplier of glass products...everything from vehicles to buildings, and it's fairly easy to find one of their sales offices (if nothing else ask at a local automobile dealer).
Perspex is one brand of acrylic...here in the USA it's commonly called Plexiglass (another brand name that has come to stand for the product).... Lexan is a large manufacturer of acrylic sheets, in clear, tinted, and even in a variety of colors, and styles.
