The United States government's budget for 1981 called for spending about 635 billion dollers. There are 5.256 x 10 to the 5th power minutes in a year. About how many dollars per minute did the government spend that year?

The first thing I did is find 10^5, which is 100,000. Then 5.256 x 100,000, which is 525600. Now that we have that number out of scientific notation, it should be easier to work with. There are 525600 minutes in a year, so all we have left to do is divide 635,000,000,000 ($635 billion) by 525600 (minutes). 635,000,000,000/ 525,600~ 1,208,143. The government spent about 1,208,143 dollars per minute in 1981.
