Question about Sikhism?

Do the male children wear turbans or do they wait until they turn a certain age, or get married or something?

I'm writing a story and one of the main characters is a Sikh.

Thanks :)

The Sikhs follow the 5K's from birth. They keep their hair from birth.

Well,Baptized Sikhs wear Dumalla a round shaped turban mostly they might also wear Dastar but rarely...NOTE not to confuse with Namdhari's they are generally ignored by mainstream Sikhs because of different religious beliefs like Sunni,Shia conflict we have major conflicts with Namdhari"s

General Sikh Turban is called Dastar,Pagg or Pagri worn on formal occasions and generally worn....

There is no specific age of tying turban though a "Dastar Bandi" ceremony is done before a child is handed turban for first time and mostly the uncle ties turban on child......I was only 14 years old when I started wearing a Dastar as it was also compulsory in my Sikh-related school otherwise we were imposed heavy fines for not tying turban and wearing a Patka instead (worn on topknot by Sikh Kids) topknot is also done by some Hindu Orthodox Saints)

The tradition of wearing perfect Turban like Kings is mostly among Punjabi's like (Various styles of Dastar Morni Dastar (a sharped turban),Patiala Shahi,Barnala shahi,Amritsar shahi dastar

Male baptized women wear Turban called as Dumalla but also women who are baptized...NOTE THAT:Women only wear Dumala but they should be baptized first and carry 5 KS

m not baptized and I have never worn Dumalla in my life....Though I keep uncut hair I only wear Dastar on formal occasions,Parna or Patka

I wear Dastar,Parna (a home or casual turban)

    Patka

Generally in Punjab Sikhs leave wearing Patka and start wearing Dastar from probably 16 or 17 years of age when they are matured or grown up enough...otherwise kids mostly wear Patka

A Dastar bandi (or you can say in english Turban ceremony) has to be done before a person starts wearing turban.....

Here are some professional turban training centre"s in Punjab that teach perfect modern turbans to Kids so that they will not cut hair which is a taboo among Sikhs but mostly due to fashion some Sikhs are cutting there hairs and leaving there appearances and are called Sikhs only for namesake by other orthodox members...Even trimming beard or natural hair like eyebrows, underarm etc is a taboo among Sikhs but some Sikhs won't even hesitate from cutting that hair but though keep head hair.....

that's dastar bandi ceremony Page www.sikhiwiki.org

I am not baptized and I have to two Kakars with me Kesh (uncut hair) and Kara (steel bangle) though some might keep Kangha (wooden comb) as well whereas baptized Sikhs carry all 5 Kakars with them Kesh,Kara,Kangha,Kacchera,Kirpan...remember that Kirpan (Dagger) is only worn by baptized Sikhs for self-defence....http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=beer+k...

That's a group called Bir Khalsa Group showing Sikh Martial Arts called (gatka) in a reality show named India's got talent....watch them all of them are carrying 5 KS hairs included....

A sikh who has cut his hair will also wear Turban during marriage and might grow some beard as well for Anand Karaj (marriage ceremony among Sikhs)

patka can be worn during sports circumstances as well like Monty Panesar of England,Harbhajan Singh of India he has trimmed his beard....all players wear Patka while playing a particular sport

Field Hockey Sikh players might wear Rumaal as it is a sweaty, tired game makes a player tired...You can see rajpal singh...only field hockey players wear Rumaal...Rumaal is mostly worn by Sikh Kids on topknot I have never worn rumaal in my life though....
