Entitlement Mentality And Government?

I would love to know why anyone out there believes they should get anything for "free"! How were you raised that you think you should not have to pay for things? Where is your own sense of honor?

I do not make a high salary and there are weeks where it gets rough. Dad offers cash these days and I quite often refuse because if I do not budget right, it is on me to accept the consequences.

You look at days of old and you really have to wonder, if you were transported back in time by 50 or 100 years, do you think you could survive?

What reason can anyone give for this "free" thought so many have today?

Update:

@mommanuke...I am looking at the question and I do not see the word "welfare" anywhere. I am talking about the mentality of MANY people in American society, even corporate people, who have this kind of thought process.

The programs labelled entitlements were designed to counter the effects of the rise of corporatism. Economic inequities have always existed, but modern macroeconomic theories have lead governments to try to smooth out the the effects of business cycles on citizens and to some extent businesses too. Once these programs are put in place, like Social Security, SNAP or unemployment, those who qualify for payments are labelled the entitled because under the law they can collect a benefit. It is not that these people feel entitled, they are entitled by law.

An entitlement mentality is not a modern phenomenum. It used to be people felt entitled to own slaves or rule under the divine right of kings. There have always been people who felt entitled. How people feel is up to the individual. In the modern world, if a person or business qualifies under law for a program, they are entitled to payment. That is what it means today.

And I would love to know why you think everyone on welfare believes that they should live for free. I would like to hear the alternatives you think they should pursue to keep from having to live on welfare.

Let's see. I guess a single mother with a kid could put an ad in the personals "Husband wanted. Must be employed and non-abusive." Or "Maid job wanted. Must let me bring child to work with me." Or the two out of three people who didn't get the job should say, "Job wanted. I know there are none out there for me, but please make one up so I can take it."

You have no idea what tough is if you have an education and have been able to get a job. In days of old, if you couldn't get a job somewhere, you could strike out on your own and homestead something. And your neighbors would always help in a pinch. Why don't you tell me how you think the poor of today can better themselves with no land to take and no jobs either!

Corporate welfare is almost twice the amount of social welfare.

The government has pushed people into this way of thinking so that they can have more control over more people. If the money for these freebies ran out tomorrow the people that were getting these freebies would turn on the government, and it wouldn't be pretty. I think the government better keep handing out the free stuff and they know it!

Looks and sounds like a rant.

I'll bet you supported Bush's 'war on terror' without questioning it!

It is sad. And I wonder how many people are like the [drug world] stars on Breaking Bad?
