Once you have that, you will be able to "rate" your horse's approach to a jump, asking him to lengthen or shorten his strides. This is where the counting strides comes into play, so you can decide if you need to ask for two long strides or three shorter ones on your approach to a jump. You look ahead and judge where you need to be thinking about a turn, and how you can best cover the space between jumps. You will be able to feel the spot at which you will need to be in two point. You need to have enough impulsion to get over a jump, but you don't want to rush at a jump at the last minute, either.

This is all best learned through much practice. But the independent seat is most important, and you can't jump effectively without one.
