Mental illness and society?

I have no opinion on the matter I would just like to see whether people think that its ok or not for confirmed mentally ill people to be allowed in society in your neighborhoods

For the sake of this article there have been several incidents with the person living near you thats mentally ill but they havent done anything extreme (such as murder)

Update:

i forgot to mention this. what statistic of american citizens are considered mentally unstable? i heard it was some unreasonably high amount so im wondering if the media is true or there standards are just way to high

Update 2:

also lynn i never said i had anything against mentally ill people i actually would consider myself among them. i just wanted atleast one answer by a person who doesn't think they should be allowed calm down man :D

"Allowed?" If they aren't allowed, about one out of four of every person is, has been or will be probably "disallowed." If you don't see that, have you considered you might be the one out of the four? Depression is a "mental illness." Anxiety is a "mental illness." Brain injuries, bipolar, addiction...there's a whole lot of "mental illness" everyone struggles with at some point in their lives.

Were you really planning on doing something with everyone who presents with one or more? What are you planning on doing with them--putting them in some kind of prison, quarantine them, ship them off to an iceberg? There isn't a big enough place to put all of them, and there is still that one in four chance you're one of them.

An article? What article? If you're asking for help to create such an article, I'd start with finding out what you're talking about before you go around asking others their opinions.

You have no opinion on the matter? It shows by your complete lack of understanding even what you're asking. People with mental issues are already part of our society and our neighborhoods. Thank God or the entire society is SOL.

Yes, mentally ill should be allowed. Mental illness is very stigmatized. In fact, most murders are NOT proven to be mentally ill. Everyone has to live somewhere. Just because one has a mental illness, does not make them a danger. There are so many different mental illness and not all cause concern to others. I would be considered mentally ill yet I live in a large neighborhood. Most would not even know I had mental illness. I doubt my neighbors even know. Some people are ticking time bombs, and not all those have mental illness. I don't think people should just be locked up and shut away just because of a diagnosis alone.

  • Confirmed mentally ill? What does that mean. Allowed in society? Like where else are they going to be, but in society. In your neighborhood? You'd rather pay to keep them institutionalized?

Let's look at each of these ideas....

Confirmed mentally ill = depression, agoraphobia, bulimia, amnesia, kleptomania, hypochrondria, selective mutism, schizophrenia - you really want to include all these diagnosis in the same fell swoop?

In society = institutions are part of our society. So what's your idea- euthanize a person for being mentally ill?

In your neighborhood = so instead you want them in prisons or institutions where they have no source of income and now you have to support them for the rest of their lives?

People need to be treated as individuals and not lumped together. An INDIVIDUAL breaks the law, deal with the individual. Making rules on the basis of a label is the first step toward disaster.
