In your opinion, what do you think are the chances of a boy/boy novel becoming popular?
Ok well I'm writing a book where the two characters that are in a relationship are both boys rather than a boy and a girl. That's not really abnormal for me, it's what I usually write, but I know some people have a problem with it or whatever. I know there are tons that are published and all but I've never heard of one that was ""popular"" if that makes sense? But my question is, in your opinion, what do you think the success rate of a boy/boy novel, if it's written well, would be considering the controversy revolving around gay rights?
I'm still going to write it regardless, but I was just mainly curious on some people's opinions on the matter. Thank you xx
@David I understand that, which is why I said "if it is written well". I'd be stupid think that a book could make it just on novelty alone, obviously.

There are lots of gay novels that became very famous, "The Front Runner" for instance. Also, books about boys have long been written. Ever heard of the Hardy Boys? They were detectives like Nancy Drew. They were brothers but the books are pretty homoerotic.
You go girl! Even if it never gets published the only way to become a good writer is to write. Writing is like anything else, you have to practice. The more you write, the better you get.

If you just rely on the novelty of it then it will suck. You still need a good story with good characters
Sorry, but asking this question makes it look like you're in it for the novelty of it. If this is something you think you should write, then put your energy into it and don't worry about anyone's reaction.

I would probably not read it, but that's no reason not to write it. I've never read any of Oprah Winifrey's picks either. It depends on how riveting the story is, how well its written, and how some marketing department will decide to spin it in advertising. If they push the gay novel aspect more than the story, you'll get fewer readers. If they spin the story first, you'll get more. I hope you find a publisher who understands that.

Honestly, they way society is going, you have a good chance of it catching on. Of course you'll face some opposition and it will be called 'controversial'. Many people are starting to accept homosexual relationships and rights, so go for it! Good luck! :)
