Question for first time visit to New York?

Thinking of going to New York later in the year. I know nothing about the place only that it interests me but I don't know what to see or where of interest to visit. It will be hotel only, breakfast and other meals out with just a seven day visit and I'm not sure how much money to take or will need either. Bit of a silly question I know but I really need to know something however small before setting off. For a sprightly seventy year old lady, your advice would be of great value to me.

Thanks in advance.

Dresden and Tham gave great answers I would like to add one must is very very very comfortable shoes we do a lot of walking here. You can find a better rate for a hotel than $300 Try looking at some other sites for hotel deals. I did well on one trip to LA from priceline, rented a room at the Century City Hyatt for $120 a night 2 years ago. You should be able to find a nice room for a bit less than $200 a night. You can get a discount coupon from Macy;s to use in their store by going to there visitor center and show your passport. Friday evenings are free admission to the Museum of Modern Art, Morgan Library, Rubin Museum of Art. Pay what you wish at the Whitney Friday evenings. Pay what you wish for admission at all times at the Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.(not the Cloisters) There are many discounts for seniors (old people like us) do ask for the senior discount all they can do is say no, , Fall is a nice time here the weather is usually pretty good. The day after Thanksgiving all the holiday decorations are up and it is very pretty but could be cold. If you have more questions just post and you'll get answers. Enjoy your visit.

This visitor's guide website should help you out with information about hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions.

Here's TripAdvisor's list of NYC hotels. You can search by area of by type of hotel.

I'd advise you to stay in mid-Manhattan. Many tourist attractions, theaters, good restaurants, etc. are an easy walk and others just a brief bus or subway ride away. This webpage has a lot of information about the area.

Get a copy of Frommer's Guide to New York City from your local bookstore if you particularly like print guides. It's excellent and should be a great help to you. (I use Frommer's guides a lot.)

NYC is expensive and a nice hotel room will be around $300 per day. The only way to figure out the approximate cost of the trip would be by adding the cost of travel, hotel per day, dining per day, souvenirs, shopping and transportation.
