Is pain the number one sympton of an ear infection?

Right now I have a little hearing loss in my both and ringing in my left ear after just having a cold last night. Could this be an ear infection or would I be feeling pain?

I've had many ear infections and yes they do cause pain. Ear infections mostly clog up your ears with wax and it wouldn't be that painful and it could cause hearing loss/tinnitus (ringing in ear) because the wax is clogging your ear. If you had a middle ear infection then that would be very very painful. Middle ear infections mostly don't cause hearing loss since theres no wax but you would know if you had a middle ear infection since those are very painful inside your ear.

You could have an ear infection if you notice a lot of wax in your ear and it does cause a bit of pain. I would just give it a day and see if it gets better or worse. If you are worried than i would go and see your doctor.

Ear infections have multiple symptoms- however the best way to check if it is an ear infection is clean your ears out with a cotton bud and if the wax is strongly scented or rather gooey then most probably you will have an ear infection... What you can do though for the time being is pour some everyday olive oil in your ear so it loosens the ear wax and then place a cotton pad in your ear to stop leakage... Usually leave this like that as long as possible (best over night!) get well soon x
