The diabetic diet is a myth, a diabetic should eat what we all should eat and that is a healthy diet. The consequences of not eating a healthy diet are just more severe.

A lot will have to do with his treatments. If he is not on meal time insulin, he can spread out his carbohydrates by dividing his meals into smaller more frequent meals and selecting lower glycemic index alternatives. If he is on meal time insulin then the carbs in his meals must match his insulin shot, some lower glycemic index foods may outlast his insulin, his insulin would outlast simple sugars.

You will notice that many of the "diabetic" recipes don't actually omit carbohydrates completely but focuses on documenting the nutritional contents instead. If you give him the nutritional contents in advance then he can work them into his diet.

He may be thin due to high blood sugars.

Your best bet is to go see a dietitian with him and learn what id best to keep his sugars in a normal range and help him safely gain weight.

    Have his HA1c checked too.
