What will make her hair grow back?

This is a rescue mare that I have been putting weight back on and she had really bad rain rot when I got her. I have given her a bath in Mane N Tail Medicated Shampoo and I think I have it all gone. But her butt looks horrible from the hair loss through the process. She has a little growing back but not much. I was wondering if there is anything to put on it to make it grow back quicker. I have kept the blanket off her so it doesn't hold moisture and start it all over again. Any ideas. I have heard of MTG but im looking for a low cost treatment and not spending

$20 on a bottle of MTG. This is a picture of her when she was wet from the last bath. I put wound kote on her after the bath for the open sores. Thanks

I am really skeptical about anything that claims to grow hair faster and thicker. You're either going to be paying money you don't want to spend on a product that may or may not work, or putting a lot of effort into concocting a homemade elixir that may or may not work, or may or may not even be safe. Just keep doing what you've been doing, and keep the area clean and dry. Treat her with the medicated shampoo as instructed on the bottle. If you don't notice her lesions improving, get the vet involved. Otherwise, just hang tight. Her fur will grow back when it's ready to grow back. It may be better for the area to remain hairless for as long as it needs to be to allow the sores to breathe and heal.

You're a saint for taking on this project! If you just have a little more patience, your ugly rescue will surely recover into a beautiful horse!

    Yikes, poor horse!

*appluads you for taking in this horse!*

I wouldn't worry about getting hair to grow back until the wounds are healed..

once there are no open wounds and the skin is black again, that is when you should start with getting the hair back.

    What I do/would use:

    - for wounds: I use neosporin/triple antibiotic cream. I go to the dollar store (same sized tube as the $8 one in stores) and buy a TON, most dollar stores only have the off brand one, but it has all the same active ingredients. and this alone usually clears up the wound and helps the hair grow back..

    - Hair growth for scars: vitamin E (moisturizing) lotion, vets will recommend this too. Everytime I have used this on a horses scars, it grows hair back, and hair the right color(instead of white hair that usually grows over scars)!

    - or but human grade vitamin E pills.. for opening them, not feeding. I adopted a horse that had fallen off a ledge into a feeder bunk, apparently she was in the tight space for four days before anyone found her, all the strugling caused giant wounds ALL OVER her entire body, her entire right hind leg and hindquarted had no skin at all, she broke her withers, the list goes on and on. about 3.5 years later, I tried vitamin E pills, (since 25-30% of this horse had no hair, just scars) I just used scissors to cut the capsel open and rubbed the liquid in her skin. after about 1.5 weeks I stared to see peach fuzz!! now she has fur, on most of her scars, it is thin, but enough that you don't notice unless you are RIGHT next to her. (she still has scars, but they look like calouses like on a goats knees.. they are on her knees/hocks and her lower right leg.)

    Good luck!

I hope the best for you and your horse!

Do not use MTG all over her body!!!! MTG is great stuff but in large doses it can burn the skin badly. I wouldnt do anything except maybe bathe her every week or two with a very mild soap.
