R&P: What's your opinion on "hipsters"?

As I type this on my 2007 iMac, in my American Apparel screen printed shirt of a local indie band, eating yoghurt and hemp seeds, drinking tea out of a Starbucks travel mug, and listening to Alt-J, I have to realise... I have unintentionally become a hipster. In small bits and pieces, assuredly. But it has happened - and I am fine with it. One day I tossed out my fishnets and Doc Martens, and... I metamorphosed.

So I must ask. Are we hipsters really as dreadful as we're purported to be (mostly by my lovely metalhead friends)?

BQ: Are hipsters even a thing anymore? Were they ever a thing?

BQ1: Who are worse - us or BVB scene kids?

Update:

@MCMT6 As per Alt-J and calling myself a hipster, I was speaking in the words of my friends. I know Alt-J isn't a "hipster band" in reality, no worries.

I hate hipsters, but not because of their tastes -- I don't necessarily care for all of them, but to each his own. It's the know-it-all, snobby attitude that I can't stand; the idea that they're so much smarter than the average bloke because they knew about this band before anyone else does, and now that it's popular it's no longer cool to like them. That is the biggest load of bullsh*t I've ever heard, and hearing those kinds of opinions from a few people has made me think all of you are a**holes. Of course, I know that's not true; I've met hipster-ish characters who hated that term because they were worried that they would perceived to be jerks, when really they are very nice guys. Still, a few bad eggs are giving people like you a bad name. But as long as you're humble and polite, I have no problem with you.

BQ1: Hipsters are still a thing, and probably emerged sometime in the 80's. As long as there is a large intellectual/liberal arts school community there will always be hipsters. Funny enough, I'm also technically from that community (English & Political Science major), but I'm not a tool and I don't think I'm hot sh*t.

BQ2: I come across far more hipsters than scene kids, but I'd probably say that scene kids are worse. Seeing parades of whiny goth/emo/whatever-the-Hell-you-want-to-call-yourself kids annoys the crap out of me, and I can't think of a single way I could relate to them. As much as I dislike the hipster attitude, I'm sure I could find common interests with most of them.

P.S. By the way, I love your screen name! Psychedelic rock and "Doctor Who" are two of my favorite things.

I fail to see how Alt-J is a hipster band because it's so mainstream. I'm not saying this to be hipsterish, they have one Youtube video with 23 million views.

The idea of being a self-identified hipster is ridiculous. They're the scene kids of this decade. They strive so hard to be different, but they end up all conforming to each other anyway. It's just another clique, and a laughable one.

edit- Oh okay, then your friends are the idiots. not you :). In some circles, saying you are a hipster for listening to Neutral Milk Hotel would result in people laughing at you and they *only* have Youtube views in the hundreds of thousands.

I have been told that I am required to hate hipsters, although I don't know what it means. Maybe it's a re-naming of preppy? Until I know what they are, I will hate them, like I've been told. I wouldn't want to go against the popular sentiment and like someone I'm supposed to hate. That would only cause me to be shunned by the non-hipsters, whatever they are.

Life is becoming difficult with too many people to please. I need a break from this, so I'll go shopping at that fisherman's store-turned preppy, Abercombie... unless I am older than 26, in which case I should be shopping at Banana Republic.

I'm pretty open minded but all hipsters should die. I was at a Morrissey show last year, front row and a bunch of hipsters are telling me that I can't possibly have heard of The Smiths in the 80's as they were some kind of obscure, avante garde intellectual arty band.

The whole anti-maimstream thing is obnoxious.

    The subculture has died down.

    Scene kids are the worst.
