Just got my first tattoo yesterday and I have a question?
I bandaged my tattoo up while I slept last night and I took it off and there's brown liquid stuff all around it. Is that normal? Or should I use a different ointment?

That's just the excess ink mixed with a little blood being expelled from the skin. Don't worry about it. It's completely normal. Happens to everyone. If your tattoo was a different colour, the leaking would be a different colour. It will stop within a couple of days max. Then you'll just get a few small stains on sheets and clothes for a few more nights. Then peeling bits of skin.
Apart from that, KEEP IT UNWRAPPED from now on. The site needs to breathe to be able to heal. Wrapping it will also create a bacteria trap, making the possibility of infection far more likely. Also, do not apply too much cream. You need only the thinnest film of cream, or you risk infection because keeping the site overly damp can create a nice home for bacteria to multiply in. Aswell, applying too much cream will prevent you from healing well by suffocating the area. Don't use any creams that contain antibiotics. They will cause your body to react to the ink as an invader (like a virus or bacteria) and your body can try to reject it. Wash twice a day with a natural fragrance free liquid soap (don't use antibacterial soap - far too drying) pat dry with paper towel, then wait about 20 minutes before applying cream so the site is completely dry beforehand.
Your tattoo looks normal. Don't worry about it. Only worry if you notice any signs of infection or reaction like blistering, serious redness surrounding, hot to the touch, oozing pus, a bad smell, pitting etc.
Normal healing for the first few days includes the sensation of warmth (not hot to touch) at the site, stinging, oozing ink and blood, a little redness surrounding the area, slight bruising (either a sensation or visual), a gammy damp look after washing (like the way a scab looks after you go swimming). Try to keep showers short and don't ever submerge your tattoo in a bath until fully healed.
For the rest of the healing process slight scabbing (if any) peeling skin (usually containing ink), a cloudy and / or shiny look to the tattoo are all completely normal. I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of things, but if you think your having a problem, contact your artist or a doctor. At the moment you are lookin good kid!
Hope that helped. Have fun!
