How does a rear main seal work?

Just curious. I mean ive replaces some on lawnmowers and stuff and how does it seal the oil in but not wear away the gasket and cause leaks because the crankshaft is spinning??

Update:

Update 2:

What a great question. Basically the crankshaft does not destroy it because the crankshaft does not touch it. It sits in a bracket and this bracket (and gasket) are smashed between the flex plate and the block so the oil cannot escape. They are a royal pain to change out (sometimes impossible) without removing the engine.

its an oil sling with a spring retainer . same principle as your lawn motors
