We'll I would have told them ALOT earlier of your plans to enlist in the military. Are you going active duty or guard/reserve? If your going active duty then you don't need to worry about a job when you get out of basic so just tell them you joined the army and your leaving in a week and your sorry for the short notice I'm sure they won't be happy but it's not like you just didn't show up for work all of the sudden at least. If you joined guard/reserve you may want to start thinking of another job when you get out depending on how nice your employer is. But anyway congratulations and welcome to the army! Basic training is a joke as long as your in decent physical shape right now and I went through in 2008. Just do whatever you can to get out of reception as fast as you can. Make sure you do all stations in receptions quickly because time doesn't start until you leave reception

Source(s): Reception is the worst part of basic, dont be a screw up and the drill sgts will leave you alone. Good luck!

    Employer:what

You:I'm leaving for the army in less than a week.

(Would also help to have copies of your orders or some kind of proof)

If you didn't give them the courtesy of a 2-week notice, then don't even bother. Just leave!

    ETA: Enjoy flipping those hamburgers!
