Do you think there should be a seperation of state and church?

As a extreme liberal, I strongly believe that the American government should separate church and state. I would like to debate this topic with you so what are your opinions?

Update:

Joe, I do not want to ban religion, but I do believe God and Religion should not be a major part of politics.

Update 2:

To clarify, I believe political debates should no come down to religion or the bible. Issues such as gay marriage should not involve the bible.

Joe, I really wish you could learn proper English and convey your ideas through actually facts and ideology.

You first need to define the term "separation of church and state" as you are using it. And how you see what it means as far as church and government and what you would limit about the relationship. To what level do you see government action?

To what extent does the separation entail, as you see it? Dismissal of government employees for wearing religious symbols? Suspension of students in public schools for praying?

Do you propose a method to separate an elected official's religious beliefs from what he proposes or supports as legislation? How does one do that?

The devil with this issue is in the details.

I agree with separation of church and state, AS I SEE IT, but we might be talking about completely different things. My belief is based on the 1st Amendment and the statement by Jefferson regarding preventing the government from being able to intrude upon or interfere with a church's business.

Per the Constitution and the understanding of the people who wrote it, they did not see that having public religious displays on religious holidays or allowing religious prayers in schools as being a violation of the Constitution. Nor did they consider laws based on general religious beliefs to be a violation of the Constitution.

The authors of the Constitution did not consider a cross on public property to be a violation of the Constitution, and I agree with that. But do you?

As I said, you need to define what you mean by it.
