Here's the question:

How many grams of NaOH (s) are dissolved in water when 23,000 kJ of heat are released?

NaOH (s) --> Na+ (aq) + OH- (aq) (delta) Hsoln = -445.1 kJ/mol

I'm totally confused on how to approach this problem.

Do I just divide 23,000 kJ by -445.1 kJ/mol and find the number of moles of NaOH and then convert to grams? I don't think it's right because the value is negative...?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

    The enthalpy of solution is negative because the reaction is exothermic, meaning heat is given off. The 23,000 kJ is also negative because the problem states that this heat is given off. This should give you a positive answer.
