How do I move files within a folder?

I have a folder with over 500 images and I need them to be in a specific order. I have Windows 8.1

But for some reason I can't change the order of files within a folder.

There is "Sort by ..." but that is useless because I don't have time to rename 500 images.

I did a search in "My Computer" for "auto arrange" and found the function

Disable_Windows_8.1_Explorer_Auto_Arrange[1]

which does allow me to move files around within but now the images bounce around like crazy and don't hold their position so it is impossible to put stuff in a specific order.

How can I make it so that I can move files around without them bouncing around?

    Hi

Once you have your photo's in order you can follow the steps below @Harley Drive here's how.

To bulk rename files simply move the you want first to the top left of the folder click on the file (highlight it) then (without unselecting it) scroll down to the last file HOLD DOWN CTRL and select this file too. ALL files in the folder should now be highlighted (this doesn't work if you just CTRL A all as you do not have the starting file)

So with all files selected right click or press F2 to rename the file(s) You should be taken to the first file again where you can change the name. (If you are taken to the last file do the steps above in reverse order) You do NOT need to add a number as this will come automatically.

EG I have 5 pictures I do the above so all are selected and when I hit F2 the first file is editable.

I enter photo as the name and click away to complete the edit. The 5 pictures are now called

    photo, photo(1) photo(2) photo(3) photo(4)

    Hope that helps

the ONLY way is to rename them starting 0001 Name then 0002 name etc it's a major weakness of windows, it is supposed to be possible with some file explorers to bulk rename files but I have never succeeded you may find a program on the internet to do it
