Atheists: What's the difference between quantum mechanics and magic?

if something can just pop in to existence.

And if something can not just pop in to existence then does that mean that the universe needs a cause?

Update:

Lukas Xavier - its not about quantum mechanics. Its about the act that either things need a cause or they don't. there is no third way. And either way the materialistic world view is not sustainable.

Update 2:

Lukas Xavier - "Quantum mechanics certainly do not allow for the animation of the dead"

What total nonsense. Where did you get that from. Even regular physics allows animation from the dead. What doesn't allow animation from the dead is biology, because of the law of bio genesis.

"or tossing around of fireballs."

Ehhm, I can toss fireball. It would hurt but I can do it. And some people can walk on coal and not get hurt.

Well Quantum mechanics is just a partial representation of the Universe.

In actuality the universe ie matter is not Uncertain but temporary.

Thats the basic flaw in Uncertainty Principle .

    Think about it!

Why are you asking atheists about quantum mechanics? We're atheists, not physicists.

    >Its about the act that either things need a cause or they don't. there is no third way. And either way the materialistic world view is not sustainable.

Sorry, I must have missed the part where you made that argument. The idea that some particles may appear without a cause doesn't constitute a problem for materialism. The idea that everything has a cause doesn't constitute a problem for materialism (at least not any more than it does for any other world view).

Just because you call something "magic" doesn't mean that all the ideas we have about "magic" applies to it. Quantum mechanics certainly do not allow for the animation of the dead or tossing around of fireballs.

quantum mechanics is NOT magic. Nowhere in the real quantum mechanics is mentioned anything about things "popping into existence".

"And if something can not just pop in to existence then does that mean that the universe needs a cause?"

Maybe, maybe not. The thing about the beginning of the universe is that NOBODY knows the full content about it. And yes, creationists, that includes you. Putting a god into the story does not fix anything about the mystery.

Don't expect folks whose Physics concepts are firmly rooted in the late 19th century "Hard edged" "Classic Physics" to have any meaningful thoughts on anything concerning Modern Physics. Those that do subscribe to the possibility of quantum based Physics are usually STUCK on the "Standard Model" "Copenhagen" theory which only explains those functions already accepted and lack the imagination to move beyond to higher concepts Like string and M theory, etc, involving parallel universes, and the like.

Most paranormal events and even some religious concepts are supported by theory that allows for flexible space time and parallel universes.

The High School and 101 Science courses most people operate at does not even go near there. Besides, Most atheists decide to become so based on having a bad experience with "Fundy" type religionists and the desire for free, "guilt free" sex.---The "Science" to back up and "justify" their decision to others comes later.

It could be that we came from nothing and are still nothing, with the mass energy if the universe cancelled out by its gravity.

Aside from that, the Omniverse is not the worst explanation ever; being non-temporal and infinitely varied, it entails neither a cause nor an ultimate overarching mind.

    Quantum Mechanics is Science.

    Magic is a hoax.

  • This smacks of the Fundamentalist strawman that 'Atheists believe the universe came from nothing'

Which is not what atheists think at all.

Quantum mechanics has a very formal mathematical framework, working with partial differential equations to solve for complex wavefunctions. Particles have a certain probability distribution of tunneling into existence or tunneling past a potential barrier. The wavefunctions are tested for experimental accuracy to make sure the equations are right...you can't do that with magic!

quantum mechanics is a theory to describe matter.

    magic is supernaturality

Quantum mechanics is demonstrable and supported by evidence.

    Magic isn't...
