A dishcloth is small and rugged and only used for soapy cleaning of nasty stuff. It gets wrung out often and generally is left damp on the side of the sink. A dish rag is the same thing, but more disposable, so it doesn't matter if it gets totally ruined. A dish towel is nicer and softer. It is used to dry rinsed dishes and should remain as clean as the surface off of which you will be eating. It is laundered after a load of dishes. The green abrasive pad is known as a scouring pad or a Brillo pad.

At home, when I was growing up, it was a "dish rag" (and a "wash rag"). I'm from Miami -- which is the least southern of all the cities in the South.
When I lived in Canada, it was "dish cloth".
I'm in western Europe now and I use sponges (and face cloths).

We call them a dish "cloth" in UK, a rag is an old cloth that would be thrown out.
