Going to the Dominican Republic this Summer?

Hello

I am going to the Dominican this June with my dad. In the country, were going to Santo Domingo, which is the Capital. Now the thing that im worried about is, I heard that the country's crime rate and Tourist mugging are pretty high. I even looked up horrifying news about deaths of Tourists, which can be found here:

Now despite this, its a beautiful country and I still want to go! My dad is from the Dominican and he knows the country at the top of his head, and he has family there too from Santo Domingo(hes been to the country numerous times and came back safe). Now here is what im really worried about, staying at a resort, I don't want to be theft or abducted by some criminal( cuz Im sure to know what would happen next). Should I convince my dad for us to stay at his family's home, or am I worrying too much for nothing?
