I make my own and I do it "on the fly" -- whatever is in the fridge might end up in it. And, I rarely, if ever measure anything. I lightly saute ("sweat") in oil (usually canola) one or two (chopped) onions with several cloves of (chopped) garlic. When they've cooked down a bit, I add (sliced) mushrooms. Since my husband is a vegetarian, if I want to thicken the sauce I'll also add several (grated) carrots ( a cooking whiz friend told me this trick). When the veggies are just about done, add a can of tomato paste AND some fresh or canned tomatoes plus seasonings -- basil, and oregano. I use soy sauce for a " meaty" flavor (and it's salty too) AND let it cook down to thicken a bit.
You can also make a really nice pasta topping using oil-sauteed onions, garlic, mushrooms (optional), fresh basil OR sage leaves and a couple of Tablespoons of butter.

I buy sauce (usually Ragu, but if something else is on sale I'll get that.)
Then I add vegetables to the sauce to make it chunkier. Usually a bell pepper and a zucchini - sometimes mushrooms, olives, eggplant, onion, carrots, or jalepeno.

I buy the cheapest brand. I'm ready to grow and can tomatos this year. Maybe i will learn how to put up some better sauces then what i use now.

I usually buy it, but it's fun to make on occasion :)
I make http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spicy...
If I buy it, I get either Classico's fire roasted tomato and garlic, or whatever I have a coupon for. :) I usually end up seasoning them further, so it isn't too big of a deal what brand it is.

I prefer to make my own, nothing fancy, but it is good. I have some variations, but the basic one is:
Ingredients:
1 medium onion, chopped
1 package of spaghetti sauce spice mix
1 can tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
1 can whole tomatoes, with liquid
1 pound hamburger, browned and drained
¼ to ½ cup water
2 teaspoons sugar (or to taste)
1 spoon vinegar
Directions:
Brown and drain the hamburger.
Mix all ingredients together and cook over a medium heat until flavor is spread.
Stir occasionally.
