Sherlock Soundtrack - is it a Zither?

Someone mentioned the use of a Zither in the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock film, but something like it figures prominently in the soundtrack to the BBC's "Sherlock". I've searched all over, even found an interview with the composers but NO mention of what the instrument is. It also sounds like a Turkish Qanun. Is it? Anyone know? I love the sound of it!

Update:

Thanks to first responder, but I should have been more specific; I meant the BBC series "Sherlock" and NOT the film. I only know that David Arnold and Michael Price compose the music, but can't seem to get any info on instruments used that would be unusual.

Well its says on the Wikipedia :

For the musical accompaniment, composer Hans Zimmer used a banjo, cimbalom, squeaky violins, a "broken pub piano" and other unconventional instruments such as the Experibass.

    Hope this helps
