NRL the new version ,good or average ?

i grew up playing ,coaching and watching a great sport called Rugby League , what I saw over the weekend in NRL was a sad version of our once great game. They nw look to recruit "athletes" rather than "footballers" losing all the great characters out of the game , and everything looks very clinical and predictable. like to hear a few other opinions. thanks.

Doc, I agree though there were some great passing moves from teams, more than we would normally see in a couple of week of footy. My concern is that the coaches have changed the game over the years (from the mid 80s) for what suits them and their team. The game wasn't what they looked at but an edge for their team. First they got rid of scrums (yes they were a pain) it was a means to compete for the ball and kept the forwards out of the backline. How often now do we see props standing at five eight, hookers playing half and vice versa. They took out striking in the play the ball. We had greats like Elias, Fenech, Piggins, Roberts who could all ruck the ball back as marker. No more stealing the ball in the tackle, ball security is a thing of the past. The ten meter rule is a joke, it was always 10 metres but the coaches changed this then had the defending team having to stand back 10 metres. I loved the competition for the ball and the confrontation this brought. A player looks like throwing a punch and he's pulled out. Love the rugby referees in the Shute Shield when a fight breaks out, quickly finished then the ref tells them " you've had your fun, lets play rugby". Common sense decisions we used to have but also long gone.

The New NRL is average to me and honest wasn't really looking forward to it this year. I don't know. the game seems to become too predictable and , score a try then take two points, Trying to strip the ball in the tackle, seem the only to make the team lose the ball. The way they do scrum in NRL, makes the game look stupid.

I enjoy and preferring to watch A League on Friday rather then NRL.

I wouldn't be surprised if crowd number start decreasing.

Yeah I agree but it better than not having nrl at all. We just have to live with that. Cheers
