Annual appraisals are happening at work soon and they always just seem like a tick in the box exercise to me.?

Any suggestions for making it a more useful experience?

It's true, most organisations don't utilise the appraisal like they are intended, and don't follow up on them. I know at my workplace a flurry get done just before accreditation.

If you are on the receiving end of the appraisal I would just be open and honest about what you're struggling with, ask lots of questions and show interest in the process by taking it seriously. Also, clarify the outcomes at the end with practical things you can do

Appraisals are supposed to give you help. They should start with How they think you are performing - what you have been doing wrong - and how you can improve.

You might think it's a tick box, but the system is there for your improvement.
