Where can I donate my old violin?
I want to donate my violin to a music program for high school or middle school kids that can't afford to pay for the use of an instrument. I don't want to donate to goodwill, Salvation Army etc. only bc where I live people generally only shop at those places for hobby to see what they can find. I want to help a child who needs an instrument but truly can't afford one. Thank you

Check out the Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation, I have donated over 100 instruments to them and they help a lot of kids. http://www.mhopus.org/

I know of an elementary school music program in San Jose, CA that needs 19 violins. Do you know where I might be able to get a donation for some of them?

Would those donations be limited to children? I know piano and would like to pick up violin, but the dang things are pricy. Free cycle is nice, but I haven't come across any donated instruments. Are there other forums I can look at?

I don't know for sure, but you can talk to your local high school or middle school orchestra director. A donation to a school should be tax deductible and they would likely be in a position to share it with a child who wants to play, but can't afford an instrument.

I would donate it to a local school in an area where you know a lot of kids are underprivileged! It would definitely get used! Don't donate it to a "rich kid" school where it will most likely be taken for gradate.

Maybe go to a elementary or middle school in your area and ask for a good kid that wants to learn. Or even try to teach a young neighbor how to play??

Bloody hell, I had to bleed myself dry to buy a violin and now you're donating one?
Don't give it to goodwill, don't give it to the Salvation Army, don't give it to starving kids in Africa. Poor people don't have the time or effort to devote to learning to play an instrument. Does that sound elitist? Does that sound unfair? Good, because that's how life is.
Give it to someone who will devote himself to his instrument, someone for whom it won't be a hobby, but a passion.
