Bike: indexed shifters: 8 vs 7?

My bike (Raleigh) has 7 cogs on the rear and shifters with 7 positions. Now, the shifters are worn (rachet mechanism worn) and I have some shifters with 8 positions. Is the spacing between the cogs the same so that I can use the 8 shifters and just adjust the limits so that only 7 positions are used?

Thanks in advance for you help...

Update:

Thanks everyone for good answers. I think that I'll just buy some Shimano 7 shifters to replace what's there now. It's difficult to choose a best answer but I'll try...

7 speed shifters are cheap, and if you look around you can probably find a single 7 speed shifter to replace your rear shifter for even more savings. Just make sure to buy a new shifter of the same brand as your original one E.G. a Shimano shifter will not work with a SRAM derailleur

Nope spacing is different. If you want to upgrade to 8 speed, then you need to not only replace the cassett, but also the rear wheel, since 7 speeds are usually freehubs.

The shifters control how far the derailleur will move with each click. Adjusting the limits will not solve the problems you will have with all the in-between gears.

The members here will basically tell you that shifters have to match cassette.

    The spacing is different.
