If employee is given a W-2C for a correction, do they have to wait until IRS gets the employer docs?

We had to correct an employee's social security number on their W-2. I filled out the W-2C and W-3C forms and the employee has her copy of the W-2C. I'm sending the employer copies today. Does the employee have to wait before filing her taxes? I'm guessing she can file them now and the IRS will just wait until they get the W-2C and W-3C from us? Or will she have to wait?

Thanks.

no,she can file when she has the original W-2 and the W-2 C in her possession

IRS does NOT receive the W-2's those are submitted to the SSA

  • She should file at her convenience. If she files a paper return by mail she should attach copies of the W-2 and the W-2C. If she e-files she just needs to ensure that her correct SSN is used on the tax return itself.

Be sure to send the government copies of the W-2C and W-3C to the SSA, not to the IRS.

Your guess is correct. The employee can file her return now. The IRS won't match up W-2s, W-2Cs, etc. to individual returns until later in the year.

The IRS does not get copies of the W2, the SSA does. The SSA allows the IRS access to this information for tax return purposes.

The employee does not have to wait, and can file as soon as the employee gets the form.
