How much does the Ukraine situation reflect on the ongoing clash between nationalism and internationalism?

A piece at the Front Page Magazine website this past Tuesday, by Bruce Thornton, examined the clashing themes of national self-determination and idealistic internationalism:

http://www.frontpagemag.com/2014/bruce-thornton/th...

These clashing themes seem to have tied American foreign policy in knots over the years, and the fact that the Ukraine seems to be, on the one hand, vying for EU membership while at the same time Vladimir Putin seems to want the Ukraine (or at least some parts of it) as part of a greater Russia is significant in my mind. The idea of the Ukraine as a fully independent country seems to be out in the cold. From my vantage point, neither option seems like such a great deal for the Ukraine (although I readily admit at the outset that I, being an American, don't view the situation there like a Ukrainian might). With regard to Ukraine with relation to Russia, we are talking about irredentist claims on the part of Vladimir Putin. With regard to the idea of the Ukraine becoming an EU member, the EU seems to be unsteady (along with the euro as a currency), and having a harder time holding together due to the rise of nationalist parties in EU member states, which resent the involvement of the bureaucracy in Brussels in the internal affairs of their countries.

First, EU HQ is in Brussels because Belgium is the most useless, irrelevant, powerless Nation in Europe. They didn't hardly notice when the NAZIs did an end run through their country around the French Maginot Line. Until recently Belgium didn;t even have a government for years. What better place for EU HQ where diplomats sit around masturbating each other's portfolios and accomplishing nothing.

How Ukraine could imagine that teaming up with EU, which is addicted to Russian oil and energy, is going to give them some freedom, is beyond me. What is desirable about Ukraine? It is like our American midwest: a breadbasket of agriculture. Food will be increasingly important in the future and most of Russia has a short growing season, while Ukraine is warmer, being farther South and on the Baltic, which offers warm water ports (don;t freeze over in winter). This would be a gem for Russia, which has to import food.

The industrial areas of Ukraine are populated with Russians while Ukrainians do the agriculture. They share pretty much the same language.

Nationalism and Internationalism? Follow the money. Very few wars have been fought over Nationalism. Most are fought over resources.

The UN itself is an enigma. They believe it is racist to discourage the violence in nations who have different standards than the West. This is why they have never defined the word "terrorism" or terrorist and often call them freedom fighters. In the same breath, they talk about the sovereignty of nations. They have no idea who is who and really don't seem to care. In the meantime, thousands of innocent people are killed while they say nothing. They believe there should be no majority white nations. They do not encourage assimilation and they call immigration migration. That is why Obama does not enforce our immigration laws. We are supposed to be tolerant while our own culture is deemed to be offensive to the new comers.

Obama is more of a UN official than he is the president of the US. He disregards our own laws favoring the international community and strongly discourages nationalism even to minimal degree. Obama's approach to everything is to skew it so badly that nobody really understands how to even abide by the laws in every area from school children being expelled for eating their food in a way that it resembles a gun to his changes in immigration enforcement (non enforcement). He now counts those turned at the border as being deported, two totally different things. His foreign policy is just as skewed. He wants to appear to be seen as powerful yet he has no real desire for the US to be influential in the world any longer. He is an international politician rather than having the interests of the US at heart. The result: World chaos.

first an foremost...Ulkraine is not united right now nor has it ever been since its independence and the gov't now is illegitiamte as it was a coup not a real revolution like in the 90s. These people are not democratically elected so anything they do is null and void....Even high ranking members of the Ukraine military have pledged their alliegance to Russia...almost a million Ukrainians have fled into Russia for safety...the Kiev spiners were of this new fascist illigitimate coup, even the EU foreign affairs ministers admit that..... so what we have a neo-nazi terrorists who got caught smuggling explosives into Crimea to commit a terrorist attack and the US govt gives them $1 billion...as usual the US supports terrorists and as usual the US is on the wrong side of history
