Need help filling out federal student aid papers?
I am filling out my FAFSA. I am separated from my husband. But we did our taxes married filling jointly this year. But that was months ago. Since I am separated, can I put that on my FAFSA? Since he does not help me with money "ANY" way. I work, so I don't want any help from him. But I don't want his income to hurt me either. Has anyone been in this situation that can help me?

On your FAFSA, you would need to put "married filing jointly" and list both of your income. After you submit your FAFSA, contact the Financial Aid Office at your institution to inform them of your situation. They will have you complete an Adjustment in Income form and you would need to provide your W2 along with the IRS Tax Return Transcript (received from the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov)./ The Financial Aid Office will then recalculate your Adjusted Gross Income and most likely split your assets 50/50 (unless you provide a written statement and documents showing which assets are yours). You will receive a new Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which the Financial Aid Office will use in order to put together your financial aid award package.
