Is my new car safe for my trip?
I have a BMW 5 series and it was a suggestion to get on here. It's 2014 and brand new but I don't want to ware it down quickly. I have to travel to New Jersey from Malibu CA. I need to carry suitcases and travel bags. (Its big enough for it, i checked). I used to travel everywhere in my volvo and finally she kicked the bucket. But i don't want to do that again so I'm curios as to know whether i should just rent a car or use my car to get there. Thank you so much!!
PS: I don't fly. Im terrified of planes.

Interesting question. Grandpa J makes some good points. You didn't mention whether you leased or purchased your car. CA-to-NJ will certainly affect your lease driving.
I'm going to answer as if you've purchased your car. I say drive it! The BMW 5-series is a great car and one of "The Ultimate Driving Machine." You'll certainly need an oil change when you return. And you may even need a tire rotation (depending on your last such maintenance). But think of the pleasure of driving across country in such a great vehicle. If you plan to keep the BMW and drive it until "she kicked the bucket" then start with this trip. You cannot rent as nice a car for $300 a week with unlimited mileage. Besides, I suspect that you'd really rather drive your new car anyway. Have fun and be careful.

About the easiest thing on a car, wear-wise, is a long trip where you cruise at a constant speed on the highway.
That said, you can rent cars today with unlimited mileage for so cheap that it makes little sense to drive your own car 6000+ miles round trip when you can rent a midsize car for just $250-$300 a week. Unless you need to be in New Jersey for more than a month before returning home, renting a car will be cheaper in the long run.
You'll put more wear and tear (and experience more depreciation because of the added miles) on your own car by driving it 6000 miles than you'll spend at $250-$300 a week on a rental car, even if you stay/need the rental car for 4 weeks before returning.

In the last five years, three people have died in the USA due to commercial aviation. Those three died in San Francisco in the Asiana crash on landing. In the same five years, over 190,000 people have died in car crashes. In the same five years over 25 million people have been hurt in car crashes. In the same five years, 1,250,000 people acquired handicap level injuries due to car crashes. And somehow you are "terrified" of planes? I think the record speaks for itself. Your issue is emotional and can be treated. This drive is over 6,000 miles round trip, can cost you over $3,000 and take over ten days just on the road. And you wish to add a rental car expense? Why did you buy the BMW for? Window dressing? Use the new car if you must.
