I wouldn't call global warming "alarmism." The greenhouse effect was first discussed publicly by mathematician Joseph Fourier in 1824. In 1917 inventor Alexander Graham Bell warned that unregulated burning of fossil fuels would cause global warming. In 1988 meteorologist Bert Bolin became the first chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, becoming one of the first to aggressively encourage governments to address the crisis.

Al Gore is just a messenger. And James Hansen continued the work which was begun by Fourier, Tyndall and Arrhenius.
