what do the distance markers on hiking trails stand for?
not miles because on a trail which was less than 7 miles the distance markers went from 1 to at least 55, didn't do the whole distance

Doesn't sound like they were really distance markers. Sometimes on day use trails they have numbered points of interest that go along with a written trail guide. They also could have been temporary markers put up as reference points for planned trail maintenance.
