E-1 private. I don't know if they still have the referral program these days. Back in the '80s when I joined, I got 2 other guys from my school to sign up, and in return, I went to basic as an E-2.
I knew some guys who had earned some college credits before they went in, and they started as E-3s.
I know that E-2 and E-3 are still low ranking, but an extra stripe always means a little more pay.

Your friend's grandfather was a colonel????
Well, we can't have you start way at the bottom, now can we? You're extra special, so you get to go right to 20 star General.
Please, give me a break! That was HIS rank and has nothing to do with you. I have actual relatives in high places (sorry I'm not going to name drop). If I could have gotten in, you'd better believe those guys would have made sure I got it even harder then the rest

You say you ARE going into the army, so I assume you have enlisted, but you don't know any portion of rank structure? I highly suggest you get to studying.

Your beginning rank depends on several things. One of those things is not what you are about to train to be. It depends on:
Education Level
ROTC Participation
ASVAB Scores
PT Scores
State Where You Entered (for some)
Some other Factors.
Your rank may raise upon successful completion of BCT and AIT

E-4 if you have your associates degree. E-2, or E-3 depending on how many college units. If nothing, E-1.

Private e-1, same as everyone else.
your friends' relatives have absolutely no say in the matter,
