Airsoft gun questions?

Looking to get into airsoft, I've done it once borrowing a gun but would like to take it more seriously. I'm looking at around £150 (or about $200) but would go more if it's worth it. I don't want something too role specific like sniping and am more interested in something that is good but will last a long time. So far I've looked at g&g smg's and Assault rifles but don't know if there any good. Secondly I have a ASG Dan Wesson revolver (4.5mm bb) whilst it's meant too shoot steel bb's if I shot plastic could I use it in airsoft it's around 400 fps with steel bb's so I don't think it's too powerful and wondered if it would make a good sidearm?

Sorry but you cannot use your Dan Wesson, at 400fps with steel bb's it will be well over the limit for airsoft ( steel bb's weigh significantly more than plastic bb's so the corresponding fps will be a factor of 5 or 10x higher!). You can get power down shells for them, that reduce the power to something acceptable but they are not that cheap. But as its 4.5mm I'm not sure you can get plastic bb's that would be allowed at any airsoft site.

G&G make good starter guns and are in your price range, the CM series start from around £120 without a battery or charger.

Get a rifle first before you get a sidearm - As you said, you don't want something role specific, and pistols are considered role specific weapons, which is why not all soldiers are issued with them in real life.

Regarding a rifle, I recommend getting a platform that use common magazines - Sometimes it is nice to lend magazines to a friend when he runs out. This applies to both AEGs and Gas guns. What platform you use is up to you, as some people prefer more ergonomic guns like the G36 or the Magpul Masada.

Second thing to remember is to buy a red dot sight for your rifle, and if you do, buy/make a screen protector for it, red-dots sights can be expensive investments so do your best to protect it. With a red dot you can acquire targets faster then with iron sights, but don't rely on it too much.

Would not recommend a revolver, because they can be easily outmatched by semi-automatic pistols in both capacity and reliability. The myth that revolvers never fail comes from its mechanical nature - And that is where people forget that revolvers are intricate objects - If the cylinders don't line up, or get stuck, you are pretty much screwed for the whole game until you get it fixed off-field. With a semi-automatic, unless it is some rare form of malfunction, you take out the magazine, rack the slide a few times, then insert the magazine and chamber a new bb.

Revolvers are more of novelty items, which is why militaries around the world have moved away from them - Not easy to load when you are under stress (or in the dark), and the intervals between loading...well, is much longer then a magazine fed weapon.
