You would no longer receive any windows updates, including the ones that tend to come out monthly to protect against malware, so when new malware infections come up you will not be protected against them. You will be at risk of infection and being hacked and it won't matter if you have virus protection.
So yes you should upgrade, but vista is not the way to go. Vista is terrible. You should go with windows 7, but you need to make sure your computer drivers will support windows 7. Depending upon the age of your computer you may have no choice but to go with with vista. There is no way you will be able to upgrade to 8. Your computer would be too old.
Now if your computer is 6 or more years old, I would highly recommend just buying a new computer with either windows 7 or 8 on it.

No matters if you are using XP/Win-7 or Win-8 virus can attack anywhere if you are not using proper antivirus or protection.
If you are using support and after that any virus will attack in your window they also can't do anything except formatting window.
So the best thing is that just use a proper Antivirus into your computer it will make you happy and keep far from miscellaneous problem like slow performance/ corrupting file/ Insecurity etc.
