How can I use Messenger to send an SMS txt?

I read that I can use Yahoo Messenger to send a web SMS text to someone using just their mobile number by typing this into the send box. But the Messenger system does not allow this apparently (mobile number is not accepted as a contact). Have I been mislead or is there a secret?

Update:

This is my answer to your answer! It seems from another source that this service is not available in the UK so I am more than interested to know how you managed to do it previously (and can do so again!)

One would think that the definitive explanation could be had from "Customer Services" but this seems to be a joke - from what I can tell they don't exist.

To be able to do this you have to set it up in the options for your Yahoo account, be on a compatible plan, with a compatible service provider - and you may find that your mobile account gets charged for any texts that you send.

Now I've done this in the past, just tried it and it doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I also cannot find the info in my profile that accepts the input of the info needed to enable the service! *I'm in the UK
