I have thought of retiring to the south of Chile. Is that possible on just $1800 a month?

My wife (Chilean) and I, together, make $1800 US on social security, and would like to retire to the south of Chile. Has anyone of you done that on a small income? I have looked at real estate sites, and the prices for homes are sky high compared to Texas. Are we just dreaming? We lived on $500 US a month in Chile 40 years ago. Now we are reading that it takes a minimum of $3000 a month to live there. Is that right?

    I *wish* I made $1800 a month... XD

I can live a humble but comfortable life for as little as CL$300,000 (about US$525). I use the rest of my income to help my family while I'm still single.

While you're right about real estate (this is a small country after all), I think that most other things are much cheaper here than where you live, particularly food. Although this depends on your particular living standards; I would probably not be so happy if I owned a car or lived in a nice apartment in condominium.

Also, I live in a low-income neighborhood in Santiago; YMMV about the south. Besides, it's not the same to live in the city or a small plot of suburban land than to live in a larger estate or a more remote place.
