Is it safe to sell laptops on a site like Cash for Laptops?

Can you really rely on them to erase all the data so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands?

I have some old nonworking laptops that my brother gave me when he was moving. This site offered me $20 for one and $64 for another, so I would like to sell them. But I don't want anyone to get my brother's social security number or credit card info or anything like that.

Update:

Why would you only sell it on eBay?

It isn't worth the 85 bucks.

the information stays in the memory- the only thing you actually ever destroy is the link to it. So a good hacker can go scrounging around and find stuff - and a SSN isn't that many numbers.

You are far better off destroying the machines, and taking them to the dump in different trips. For what it will take for you to undo the damage to your brother's identity, even $850 wouldn't cover it.

My mom sold her old laptop too http://www.selllaptop.biz/ It is a legitimate site that offers you a quote as welland free shipping label. I would NOT sale on Ebay, if someone is unsatisfied with the laptop they can return it and leave you more out of cash even when you say NO RETURNS. So I would go with a website like the link I added cause they aren't out to screw you over. I'm pretty sure they erase all content on the laptops nothing ever happened to my mom.
