Learn to look at both sides of an argument to see where they are coming from. Avoid bias. Debating is about the facts of the matter, and if you are going to debate them, you should know what the other side is going to say and have responses lined up.

Become grounded well in your position. Be succinct and to the point. Like selling, you must come to believe (or ACT like it) in your product/position. Half of debate is sheer solid up right holding ground civilly. Become adroit with your responses--quick thinking.

IF your debate opponent goes off track and tries to deflect and go off topic? Hold the point and stay on topic. Even point blank tell him he's off on a tangent.

To be a good debater, first you need a really good knowledge base about your subject. Then you need to be able to deliver it in a logical and reasonable way. You need to be able to listen to the opposite view, and, in a polite and informative way, offer rebuttals to their points.don't get angry or over-emotional, and don't use abusive or insulting language. Alway remember, you may be wrong, and should be prepared to accept defeat with dignity and acknowledgment of your opponents better arguments.

Also you need solutions,knowledge of both sides and then other views,why you feel they don't work,and passion.You have to believe in what your saying, if you get up there and don't believe in what your saying,what have you accomplished, none.
