EDIT @ Rhubarb Mudcock:
That Grace Bros store on Broadway used to have wonderful Christmas pantomimes on each year and a lovely kind of castle walk thru display. Nothing left like that to take our kids or grandkids to, unfortunately.
EDIT @ Jan S:
OMG I remember the Coles store in the city with the upstairs cafeteria. My mum used to take me there quite often. It was my favourite place when I was about 10 years old. Near the back & opposite the bistro, I always ordered waffles with caramel sauce and ice cream. And if you remember, we had to pay 2 cents to use the toilets there. (Showing our age now) !!
I was also going to mention Waltons, (Bankstown) then it changed to Venture.
I remember Flemings (although that was a supermarket)
Fossey's Dept store (I think owned by Coles).
Macy's in the Sydney CBD as well.

Grace Brothers on Broadway was my favourite.
I have a Bazooka speargun here which I bought on lay by from Myers at Miranda Fair when I was about 15.
It needs a new rubber and a minor repair but otherwise it's still good.

I remember Jewel Food Stores. It think they got absorbed by IGA's. Their black and white labels for "No Name" foods stood out. I still call all generic brands "No Name".
The clothes they had in Best and Less were heaps better quality than the tat and landfill from China that's all you can get from Kmart these days. I miss Best and Less.

You mean Grace bros has gone? Shows how often I make it into the CBD. I remember Gowings from when I first came to Sydney. It was a good shop. I don't know any of the others though, I'm not a long time Sydney resident.

Grace Bros on Broadway, Farmers, Myers, Mark Foys, Buckinghams.....I remember they use to come to our door & mum would buy clothing & linen directly from their van, on a payment plan. Waltons, Coles Variety Store....& their cafeteria - I remember we d sit on a stool at the counter & watch all the orders come through a little opening from the kitchen, on a conveyor belt. Woolworths Variety Store (it s still there I think), Countdown, Fosseys, Venture, Chandlers Electrical store, Flemings, Knock & Kirbys Hardware, Winns catalogue I use to buy my kids clothing from there once a year, when we lived in a Qld country town & I d pay C.O.D at the post office when it arrived. Darrel-Lea in the city......I use to love that big shop. Memories, memories sweet memories !!! If only our city was still like it was back in the day.

Don't forget Nock and Kirby's hardware store in George Street, Sydney. Joe the Gadget Man was their TV ambassador - "Bring your money with you. Bye now".
