why does it take so long to travel in india?
i am looking for information between certain cities in india, and for example 220km route between 2 cities is said to take over 4 hours!!!??! I'm in Canada, and that would take a bit more than 2 hours, not 4! Are the roads really bad in India, or just maximum speed is very slow?

It recently took me about six hours to cross a distance of 220 kilometers from Mumbai to a small beach town. Roads for most part were good. So where did I lose time. Let's see
--When traveling with children, you can directly add about 40 minutes to every 2 hours since this is how long a journey break lasts.
--Traffic Jam at 3 places killed about one and a half hour.
--The toll collection plazas were not properly manned and in rush hour this could add another 20 minutes to your journey for every toll plaza you cross during rush hour.
--Speed bumps on the road passing through towns and cities means you have to slow down every now and then which could add another 30 minutes to every three hours.
--Finally the bad roads which was a treacherous ten kilometer stretch between two hills and ate up another hour.
However not all roads are like that. An early morning trip from Mumbai to Pune (about 150 to 180 km depending upon your starting point) can be completed in a little over 2 hours. Similarly a trip from Delhi to Jaipur (under 300 km) can be completed in less than 4 hours. Maximum allowed speed on most roads is 60 to 80 km/hr.

It depends on the cities. Cities like Mumbai, are very big and also have a lot of traffic. Sometimes the roads are bad, but it's usually traffic or the size of the city.

There are over a billion people in India, and the roads are not built to north American
standards but then again Indians are not in such a hurry as they are more philosophical.

Are you kidding me? The roads in India are among the worst in the world.
Those little motorized rickshaw drivers will tell you that it takes very long to get anywhere because the roads are full of potholes and hazards.

By the way why would you want to go there? They gang rape women and murder their male companions.
