A friend of mine thinks her dog may have ingested a small amount of antifreeze on Saturday 3/22. She said it might be only about 2-3tbsp. Her dog is an 8 year old Golden retriver that is on Chemo for acute leukemia. He is not showing the signs of any of the stages as of today. Will he be ok? Should she take him to a vet?

Antifreeze will cause kidney failure which often does not show up for several dogs after ingestion. It does not take much - often less than 1 tsp to 1tbsp to cause toxic effects. I would definitely take your dog in to checked via bloodwork to see how bad the levels are and then proceed from there. Because he already has a medical problem there may not be a chance but your vet can determine the best treatment. I hope he does okay.

My cat was killed 2 years ago because of this. She was sitting under a car & some antifreeze dripped onto her fur, the smallest amount, which she licked whilst cleaning herself and she was found unconscious outside our door a day later - we took her to the vet, they gave her fluids, tried to help her, but she died later that day.

Antifreeze is poison to dogs - can cause acute kidney failure and lots of other problems. I'd recommend that your friend takes her dog to the vet to get him checked out.

The dog should have been taken to a vet immediately, it is too late now, it's in his system. Call the vet and/or poison control. Most likely you will have bring the dog in now.

I would get some kitchen oil and ...1/2 cup and get it down the dog....it will lubricate the intestines and allow this stuff to move on quickly
