Been made redundant. Help!?

I found out about my redundancy about 2 weeks ago. However, I had my redundancy meeting only yesterday (as my manager was on holiday and didnt get anybody else to do the meeting with me earlier). He told me yesterday that I have to work a 4 weeks notice from yesterday.

Ive managed to find a new job, which I will be starting the last day of my notice period, but I want some time off before starting. I want to be able to relax a bit and get my head around the fact that im starting a new job, rather than jumping from one straight into the other.

I think its rather unfair that I have a 4 weeks notice period from yesterday, even though I was told about the redundancy 2 weeks ago, and they failed to do anything about my next meeting after that.

I contacted HR and spoke to the lady and asked if I would be able to have 7 working days off, and basically finishing on the 10th instead of the 18th. She got back to me saying that it is up to my manager.

Not long after talking to her, my manager brought me into a meeting room and basically questioned me as to why I contacted HR, and now he is p!ssed off with me, saying how I have shot myself in the foot.

Im I entitled to any time off? Is there a way that I can go about this??

Thank you!

If you are not receiving a redundancy pay out then you can leave today. They are taking your job away from you so why should you do them a favour, what can they do about it -- nothing. You can always go sick for the last week !!!!

Piran above is completely WRONG and if you do as she says, you will not only lose your redundancy pay but also never get a good reference from your employer.

If you needed some time off so badly, why on earth did you not just tell your NEW employer that you will start a week later? Come on, try to act like an adult now and go back to your new employer to negotiate another start date.

If you stop working without permission before your redundancy date you will be deemed to have quit your job, and you will lose any redundancy payment which was due.

Check if you have any outstanding holiday entitlement, because you are allowed to take any holiday that is due to you.

Otherwise, you can only negotiate with your manager. The reason your four weeks goes from when he talked to you, rather than from when you were first told, is because you are legally entitled to four weeks work from that meeting, and had they only given you four weeks from the announcement date you could have complained and claimed lost pay from them

If you don't see the whole of your notice out you will be leaving before the redundancy kicks in and so not get any pay out.

Sorry to hear that. But you have to work your notice , unless you are owed holiday. If that is the case, then they should have given you the option. But if you are not owed any holiday , you have to work your notice off. Otherwise you are effectively making things worse.
