Obama's latest answer still begs the question: if not Russia, then who is the USA's greatest geopolitical foe?

ABC reporter asked Obama the following:

"In China, Syria, and Egypt — and now in Russia — we have seen you make strong statements and issue warnings that have been ignored. Are you concerned that America's influence in the world, your influence in the world, is on the decline?" And, he added, in light of recent developments, have you rethought your critiques of Romney?

Obama's reply (roughly transcribed):

"The truth of the matter is that America has got a whole lot of challenges. Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors — not out of strength, but out of weakness. ...

We have considerable influence on neighbors. We generally don't need to invade them in order to have a strong cooperative relationship with them. The fact that Russia felt the need to go in militarily and lay bare these violations of international law indicates less influence, not more.

"My response [to Romney] then continues to be what I believe today, which is: Russia's actions are a problem. They don't pose the number one national security threat to the United States."

But Obama never answered who is our greatest geopolitical foe? Obama's original answer (during the Romney debates) was Al-Qaeda. But pundits on both sides pointed out that Al-Qaeda is hardly a "geopolitical" threat.

If the USA's "greatest geopolitical foe" is not Russia, then who does Obama think it is?

Update:

@ Duck Duck Goose: I seem confused? What debates were you watching? The one I watched featured this quote from the President:

“Governor Romney, I'm glad that you recognize that Al Qaida is a threat, because a few months ago when you were asked what's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, YOU SAID RUSSIA, NOT AL-QAIDA; you said Russia, in the 1980s, they're now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War's been over for 20 years.

“But Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s…”

So I am correct when I say that Obama (albeit indirectly) named Al-Qaida as America’s greatest geopolitical threat. You say it’s actually Iran and North Korea? OK, I don’t necessarily disagree with that assertion (although without the Russians, Iran’s potential to do America harm would be greatly diminishe

Update 2:

@Flower: Iran is no enemy? Iran is seeking atomic weapons. Its leaders have called for the elimination of Israel as a state. Ahmadinejad once openly stated that, while it would take several atomic weapons to destroy Iran, it would take only one to destroy Israel, based on its size. Iran materially supports Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which aggressively attack Israel and threaten regional stability. Iran uses its proxies, Hezbollah and Syria, to choke off democracy and self-rule in Lebanon (although Syria’s role in this has been recently diminished by its own internal struggles). Iran continues to foment violence in Iraq in order to destabilize the democracy there and to frustrate US and regional interests. In light of the above, I would say that, if Iran is not an enemy, they sure act like one.

Update 3:

@Dan: I agree that Russia is only a shell of its former Soviet self. But I disagree that Russia has no influence outside Europe. For example, without Russia's help, Iran would be much less of a threat, both to the US and to the Middle East. They are a material supporter of Hezbollah. They are also still a nuclear power and hostile to democratic ideals. Putin has reignited its close ties with Cuba and continues to use Cuba's Lourdes electronic monitoring facility for eavesdropping on American telecommunications. Russia sold arms to Chavez and may continue to sell to Venezuela in the post-Chavez era, in order to keep the Chavistas in power. And Russia’s defense minister says the country is planning bases in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Bolivia may follow as Putin strengthens ties with Bolivia's Evo Morales.

Maybe they aren't as powerful as they used to be, but they are still a threat to global stability. Are they our "greatest geopolitical foe?" Perhaps not

Iran and North Korea post a greater threat to the US than Russia.

    China poses an economic threat.

But, still, Al Queda remains our biggest security challenge, even if not exactly a "geopolitical foe."

America's influence is hardly declining with the economic and military force overwhelming the globe. The difference is the U.S. cannot accept other countries becoming more independent from the U.S. grasp and asserting their own interests instead of being subjugated to American interests as it has been for the last 100 years. I think Obama's press conference and his comments were insipid and awkward. The U.S. does not have to create any political enemies. It's stance toward Russia is completely unnecessary and hurts the local economy of Russia and there was no reason for it.

Iran is no enemy. The U.S. creates so-called villains in the world to deflect from its own crimes. How about working for peace for a change at the expense of weapons manufacturers and investors? What a hoax. Otherwise, U.S. could invade or attack No. Korea because they launched a missile toward the U.S. (so State Dept claimed). Russia has done nothing to harm American interests. America can still have control of the Ukraine.

The answer to that question is no country on earth will be the greatest geopolitical foe of the U.S. And Obama is right that Russia is only a regional power and not a world power. Russia basically, has no influence outside Europe. And the thing that makes Russia somewhat relevant is that they have a permanent seat in the UN security council which makes their decisions relevant. But other than that they are not as powerful as you think they are. The Soviet Union, will be the closest adversary the U.S has ever faced. That's the reason why NATO was form in the beginning because it wouldn't be enough for the U.S alone to go head to head with Soviet Union.

Iran & North Korea were our "greatest geopolitical foes" during Obama's campaign in 2008, and remained so during his 2012 campaign...

    They remain so today.

    You seem confused...

Perhaps you should watch some of the Presidential debates again on YouTube?

Just a few months ago, the GOP propaganda machine was saying great things about Putin - since he made Obama look bad by finding a peaceful solution to Syria's chemical weapons. Now Putin is back to being our biggest foe?

Man, it's tough to keep the talking points straight.

I need a shorter memory, maybe I don't watch enough TV?
